Weekend Open Thread   2 comments

It’s time for another weekend open thread, where you folks can discuss any topic you like.

With the popularity (or is that infamy?) of the recent tv movie Sharknado (which I still need to see), and considering it’s summertime, I offer to you my 3 favorite shark movies of all-time:

1. Jaws (1975): The movie that became a classic was feared to be a bomb before it was released. Production delays, cost overruns, and technical difficulties (“Bruce the shark” was a temperamental actor) all led to rumors that this movie would be a dud. Instead, it made Steven Spielberg famous. The cast was outstanding, headlined by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfus. If you only see one shark movie in your lifetime, see Jaws.

2. Deep Blue Sea (1999): I may be the only person who loves this movie, but it’s a fun and scary movie. A scientific research station at sea is using mako sharks to try to find a cure for Alzheimers. Apparently, the shark brains produce a chemical which inhibits Alzheimers. So we have the mad scientist (played by Saffron Burrows) who decides to genetically enhance their brain size to produce more of the chemical. You see where this is going? The cast features Samuel L. Jackson and LL Cool J, who both give memorable performances. The rest of the cast you wouldn’t remember if I told you, yet they all did quite well, probably because it was directed by Renny Harlin, who also directed The Long Kiss Goodnight (my favorite Samuel L. Jackson film) and Die Hard 2.

3. Jaws 2 (1978): “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…” Admittedly, the ad line for this movie was probably better than the film itself. Still, Jaws 2 wasn’t bad, although it clearly missed Spielberg’s deft directorship. But it did bring back Roy Scheider, who actually makes this film a bit more than a fish tale with his selachophobia (fear of sharks). Fortunately for Scheider’s Chief Brody, “Bruce the shark” makes him look quite sane as Bruce does his best ham actor impersonation (literally chewing the scenery, including a helicopter). I may tease Jaws 2, but it was a fun movie to watch.

Have a great weekend folks, and stay out of the water!
