Weekend Open Thread   8 comments

My portfolio didn’t beat the indexes, although it was still a positive day, +0.22%. Now it is time for the weekend open thread! Discuss what you like here.

For your entertainment, it isn’t often that I post movie ads on this blog, but this one was about as creative as I have seen, not to mention kind of funny (at least to someone with a warped sense of humor, like me):

Enjoy your weekend folks!

  1. After six weeks in Uganda, and Tanzania and Zanzibar, and a four day lay over in Istanbul plus two weeks at home getting caught up it is great to know Ed hasn’t lost his sense of humor — great video.

I left on August 24 and the world was suppose to end with the government shut down — it didn’t. The Republicans were going to repeal ObamaCare — they didn’t. The Republicans were going to reduce the debt — they increased it (paying people, government workers, not to work doesn’t reduce anything). The stock market was due for a pull back — still waiting. NUGT — nothing to say but all the money I made on this has been lost three times over and doesn’t look any better now than 2 months ago. Trader still is the man to go to on technicals. Marshall, would you like to handle my accounts? Ed, your portfolios have done great ever since you stop day trading and your stock reviews are still very good even when I disagree as in APPLE.

Some of the beers I tasted: Nile Special, Bell, Club, Kilimanjaro, Safari, and Tusker. Tasted as in two beers every night after game driving or walking all day.

Birds: 305; Mammals: 29; Reptiles 4 snakes and 4 unidentified turtles and several identified lizards and several unidentified lizards and a great photo of a very large spider

Africa is 3rd world like we have never witnessed (We have traveled all of Central America, Mexico, 5 countries in South America, India, Bhutan, China, etc.). The country of Uganda was great! However, I am estimating 50% of the villages/small towns have no electricity and there isn’t a single paved road that crosses the country from east to west or north to south. Good news: life expectancy has increase from 47 to 56 in the last 13 years. While in Uganda we spent a half hour with 3 Chimps. Just the guide and us. They were 15 or less feet away. After a 2.5 hour hike from hell we spent 1 hour with the gorillas — one slapped Nancy on her rump to let her know she was in the way! If the opportunity arises I would return to Uganda.

Tanzania is way ahead of Uganda — nothing like avoiding tribal war to move a country forward. Still a very 3rd world country. But they have electricity and paved roads. The Serengeti is something everyone should experience — wide open spaces with nothing but beautiful scenery and animals everywhere.

Zanzibar was Nancy and my first attempt at “relaxing”. We spent two days in Stone Town and two at a drop dead beautiful resort. Two swimming pools, ocean 20 yards below and away from our huge room/suite with hot water always available, great food, a fully stocked bar, weather to die for, a small soaking pool outside our room for the two of us, a porch with sofa and two person hammock on our porch looking over the ocean And only 11 other rooms at the lodge/resort.

Istanbul — just behind Paris, France on places I would move to on a permanent basis. Absolutely fascinating! Also great food — only better food we have had is India.

Back to reality — what to do with the shares of NUGT?

    My best to everyone.

    • Latetom,
I’m glad you had a great trip! It sounds like fun.

As for NUGT, I’d say eat your losses. Holding a triple leveraged etf for months is begging for trouble. Remember, leverage is not your friend the longer you hold it.

By the way, I haven’t stopped daytrading. I’m just far more particular about it now. 😉

    • Tom – welcome back. Thanks for the review. Istanbul is on my list of places to see. You have confirmed that with your comments.

  2. Welcome back Tom. Glad to know you are back safely. Wow! What a trip! I hope you will be posting your pictures on your website – what is it again!
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thanks for the Video. I heard about this and now know why people were complaining about Pissing their pants and running for their lives… ha ha I don’t know how I would have handled it.

  4. Glad to hear from you again. Wow, great trip! I would love to see some pictures. As for Nugt, glad that I dumped it even it was a 50% loss.

  5. I went to see “Gravity” yesterday. I think it should be a strong candidate for the Academy Awards. It was a very thought-provoking film. You may see it for the special effects, but it is really a much deeper film than that. Highly recommended, and very “family friendly”. There is one scene with a dead astronaut that isn’t for the squeamish, but it’s only flashed on the screen. I would give it 3 and a half stars (out of 4), which is still better than most films.
