Weekend Open Thread   5 comments

It is almost weekend again, so time for this weekend’s open thread, where you can discuss any topic you like.

This week, I offer for your consideration: The circus! Specifically, my favorite circus-themed songs:

1. Send in the Clowns by Judy Collins: I think this song has been covered by everybody but Jimmy Durante. But Judy Collins gives what I consider the definitive cover of this Stephen Sondheim classic.

2. Don’t Cry Out Loud by Melissa Manchester: This song gets into the top three mainly on the vocals of Melissa Manchester, one of the most powerful, and underrated, voices of the late 20th century.

3.Circus by Britney Spears: Obviously, all circus-themed songs aren’t strictly about contrasting the circus with serious topics. Say what you will about Britney Spears, but her music is polished and well-produced. And much like Miss Spears is easy on the eyes, her music is easy on the ears. Think of this as your musical candy dessert after the serious entrees of the first two songs:

Enjoy your weekend folks! And don’t walk behind the elephants…

PORTFOLIO UPDATE: My portfolio finished up 0.15% today.

  1. Ed,

What are your thoughts on EMC and INTC? EMC has not rallied this year but I think their longer term outlook is good and gives you a small divy while you wait. INTC has nice divy also although has done better in last year than EMC. Wondering entry points also for these stocks. I have read some articles that believe the rotation to large tech companies over small tech may be soon coming.

    • EMC is ok, although they are priced for better than expected growth (PEG ratio of 1.13). They have solid financials and excellent free cash flow. Their dividend could be higher (1.7% yield with a 15% payout ratio), although they just started paying it this year. EMC is at about the best price you will get them at, around $24.

If you are looking for a dividend play, INTC is the better one. I’ve covered them thoroughly before (I prefer MSFT to Intel). However, i don’t like INTC at the current price. Unfortunately, getting them at a good price may be too late. Unless the market collapses, the best price I can see them having in the near future is a little above $23, and that isn’t good enough to get my attention.

If I had to choose between them, I’d probably take EMC around $24, and hope they raise their dividend.

      • Thanks Ed

Have you ever looked at PKT? Thoughts?

      • PKT is a new one for me. It’s pretty richly valued, especially for a company without profits that is expected to grow earnings by only 30% in the next 5 years. Even if you assume analyst estimates are conservative, this company needs to turn profitable and then grow by 6 times more than the analysts estimate to justify the current valuation. I just don’t see PKT as worth it, as the market’s expectations have set a very high bar for them.
